Low-Sugar Coffee

A Quick Guide to Ordering Low-Sugar Coffee

At this clinic, coffee is not merely a morning pick-me-up; it is consumed for life sustenance.

That being said, even the most innocent specialty drinks at the coffee house can easily run you 5+ tsp of sugar! Is that really how you want to start off your day? Finding low-sugar options when ordering coffee is actually pretty easy! You just need to know what to ask for.

First things first: if you want something flavored, ask what they have for sugar-free syrups.

Most coffee places now carry a variety of sugar-free flavor options. In the Bismarck area, we have found that Coffee Break, Gloria Jean's, City Brew, and Boneshaker Coffee Company all have a lot of options for sugar-free syrups. The bigger chains, such as Starbucks, Caribou, and Dunn Brothers usually have the basic flavors, i.e. vanilla, caramel.

Now, for the main event!

Drip coffee: hot or iced plain coffee, or a cold brew - add a little heavy cream and/or a sugar-free syrup.

Americano: espresso with water - add a little heavy cream and/or a sugar-free syrup.

Latte: sub almond milk for regular milk, but make sure to ask if the the almond milk is unsweetened!

Breve: a latte made with half and half instead of milk.

For the coffee novice, here's a handy chart to help you order like a pro.
